We're building a new house and it's nearing completion. There will be 9 TVs. There's actually a main house and a guest house on a different foundation, but connected by a covered walkway. There is conduit running between the houses with coax and cat5/6.
I talked to a local DirectTV installer but I'm still a bit confused. I'm hoping someone here can clarify a few things.
First of all, this is how it was wired. 4 coax outside of the guest house where we want to mount the dish. Those run through the conduit between the structures and into the equipment closet of the main house. There are 6 TVs in the main house, all with their coax running back to that same equipment room. Another coax runs from the equipment room through the conduit to a smaller equipment closet in the guest house. That closet then has 3 coax running to each of the 3 TV locations in that house. All TV locations also have a cat5e and cat6 and will be on the same local network.
The installer said it would take a $500 switch, but it could be done. He also said that the receivers we $150/ea. above what DirectTV covers (4?).
In doing a little research, the receivers on here seem to be $99, and a SWM-16 $105. Am I missing something? Is our wiring setup such that a SWM-16 won't work?
I'm also very confused with all of the options DirectTV has with Genie, whole home dvr, etc. All of these TVs will have RVU, but apparently only 3 can be on at time, so having more than 3 clients is pretty much useless. And you can't have more than one Genie. So we'd have 1 Genie, 3 clients (mini or TV's RVU), and I suppose 5 regular old HD boxes.
Are there any other options out there for our setup? If not, is what I hear from the installer accurate, or is there some good markup in his hardware prices?
Thanks!
