Itis my understanding that in the future DirecTV will totally re-brand as AT&T and simultaneously new hardware will roll out that will eliminate the Genie and wirelessly do it all.
FromDSL Reports:
"Not too surprisingly, AT&T plans to wean users off the DirecTV name after acquiring the satellite provider earlier this year for the rock-bottom price of $69 billion.
The company's set top, router and gateway hardware "will become a consolidated, single platform over the next 24-36 months."
Currently for my home to get DirecTV's 4K programming, besides getting a newer Genie @$6.50 per month I have to jump thru this hoop:
From DirecTV website:
Please note: If you have a DIRECTV 4K Ready TV and set it up as the primaryTV in your Whole Home network, we strongly recommend that you connect your Genie HD DVR to a secondary 4K TV.
You will not be able to enjoy DIRECTV 4K programming on the DIRECTV 4K Ready TV if its connected to the Genie HD DVR.
In my case that means moving the DVR to a second NON-4K TV three rooms away (new drop, etc.).
So evaluating all this, waiting for the new hardware and increased 4K programming might be the plan.
Curious to hear from others.
