Hi all,
I was stumbling through the website thinking about updating a friends Antenna system, (he has an old R.S. VU120XR with broken elements).
It isn't even much of a challenge since he gets Chicago just fine through some trees and Milwaukee a little with the antenna pointed south in the opposite direction.

He wants to do away with the rotor and is willing to go the two antenna route. Since the two markets transmission towers are about 170 degress opposite of each other, I was suggested to get an AD DB4e and take the reflectors off.
Good idea I think, but I also liked the DB8e, thinking that with both transmission towers are over 40 miles away, it might not hurt to have a little extra receiving power since he has white pines to the south (Chicago) just above the antenna level about 30 feet up on a chimney mount above the second floor roof peak. Since the DB8e is really just 2 Db4e's I figured just aim the two 180 degrees opposite of each other and leave the reflectors on.
I have read that the DB8e doesn't work well with the 2 antennas articulated opposite of each other, that they work better at right angles to each other more like 90 degrees. why is that?
Now the second part of the question. Will the Extreme Signal HDB4X and HDB8X perform as well as their AD counter parts?
The reason is, the HDB4X is on sale right now for 24.95 and why not buy 2 and face them 180 degrees apart on the same mast? would it work? Or would the same conditions haunt that combination that haunts the DB8X with each antenna 180 degrees opposite?
This friend is kind of a frugal type and doesn't care much about brand names. For me quality is important, since I don't want to go back on his roof years from now. All the reviews I have seen are very positive on the HDB4X as far as quality.
What say you members?
Thanks, Bob
