What's new with COM1000

It's true that the old standby COM1000 system doesn't make a lot of headlines lately. After all, DIRECTV has their Residential Experience package now, and it's easier than ever for people to put the real, 100% home experience in front of hotel guests. However, here's the hidden secret -- not every hotel will qualify for DRE. In fact, if you're a small hotel or even a smaller chain you might not qualify. That's where COM1000 comes in.

COM1000 is the headend-in-a-box that puts 24 channels of HD into the same amount of rack space that you would normally only fit eight receivers. It's configurable through your browser and runs as a set-it-and-forget-it system perfect for smaller properties. It's also infinitely scalable... you can combine multiple COM1000s to give you a full channel selection that's easy to distribute through a hotel, hospital, or even university. Imagine hundreds of channels through a single loop-through wire with no intermediate switches, just an amplifier here or there. That's COM1000.

When you opt for DIRECTV Residential Experience, you're opting for a solution that looks and acts exactly like it does at home. That's good and bad. Customers have the option of using DVRs and managing parental controls from the front desk, but they can't incorporate DRE into a pay-per-view or automated checkout environment. On the other hand, COM1000 does these things and does them well.

What are you giving up with COM1000? For years it's been that electronic program guide. Customers have settled for an old-style scrolling guide with no interactivity. However, with newer hotel TVs, the TV itself is capable of building its own electronic guide. No, it doesn't look like DIRECTV's version but it does work, and really well!

Sure, DRE is sort of the holy grail of hotel experiences, but it's not for everyone. Before looking at a more expensive and poorer quality analog headend, you should definitely look at COM1000. It's powerful, it's small, and the picture looks great. What more could you ask for?
