Questions on Proper Antenna Set Up for OTA - Would I benefit from a preamp?

I live in south Dayton, Ohio. I am trying to get Cincinnati stations from my location. According to AntennaWeb.Org, the Cincinnati stations that I am interested in are approximately 40 miles away. My set up has changed a lot but my current set up is as follows:

Xtreme Signal HD8200XL Long Range HDTV VHF/UHF/FM Antenna
One splitter to send to two televisions
A cheap RCA amplifier at first tv (after splitter)

I have the antenna pointed towards Cincinnati stations which have not really hurt the Dayton stations (88-93% signal strength according to tv onboard meter). The Cincinnati stations are blue/violet and I am trying to get. Without a preamp, the signal strength is approximately 37-42% for the Cincinnati stations. Do you think a preamp would help that strength increase? I have seen some articles that say for blue/violet, a preamp would help. I also read that a preamp should not be used for yellow (my Dayton stations). So I am worried about putting a preamp in and it hurts local station signal. I heard over amplifying could be a problem too. I do not notice much difference with the amplifier connected/disconnected.

I have removed approximately 75 feet of cable and a splitter to get to the current set up as well as the removal of a 65 mile antenna that was pointed at Dayton to just have the one antenna as well a the removal of a couple splitters.

Any help in this would be greatly appreciated.
